Here’s a band that is definitely on my “artists to watch” list. Atlas Genius is a band from South Australia, and their sound is a blend of upbeat alternative rock and 80s New Wave and Pop sensibility. Their EP Through The Glass came out in 2012 and is just starting to pick up some acclaim. More importantly, their full-length album When It Was Now drops February 19th.
So how does their four track EP stack up? “Trojans” is aptly titled. It’s a catchy upbeat clappy head bobbing track that gets in your brain. The music is equal parts New Wave and modern alternative like Franz Ferdinand. Vocalist Keith Jeffrey has a certain dreamlike quality to his voice that makes these songs a little bit soothing and haunting at the same time. “Back Seat” has a dirtier guitar and thicker bass line and borders on being a funky dance track. It reminds me of the band The Virgins a bit, which is never a bad thing. “Symptoms” has has gorgeous guitar jangle and drifty swooning vocals over an intricate beat. The fourth track is the Crown City Acoustic version of “Trojans”. It’s great to hear how the song sounds stripped down to its sweet melancholy sounds on just vocals and guitar.
If these three tracks are anything to judge from, this band has that special something. I can’t wait to see what more they have to offer when the full album comes out.
They have videos for all of the three main tracks. Check them out here:
