EDITORIAL: PRINCE UNWISELY SLAMS MAROON 5 FOR COVERING “KISS” IN NEW BILLBOARD COVER STORY..

According to The Huffington Post, a new issue of Billboard Magazine this week has a cover story featuring the ever-elusive Prince. Now I have been a fan of his work since I was a kid first getting interested in music around the time of Purple Rain. But I have to call bullshit when I hear it. According to the article he knocks the fact Maroon 5 covers “Kiss” on the deluxe edition of their latest album “Overexposed”, saying:
“I do pay performance royalties on others’ songs I perform live, but I’m not recording these songs and putting them up for sale,” “Why do we need to hear another cover of a song someone else did? Art is about building a new foundation, not just laying something on top of what’s already there.”

So below I would like to list the cover songs Prince has RECORDED and RELEASED:

“Betcha By Golly Wow!” (1997) – Original by The Stylistics
“La, La, La Means I Love U” (1997) – Original by The Delfonics
“One Of Us” (1997) – Original by Joan Osbourne
“I Can’t Make U Love Me” (1997) – Original by Bonnie Raitt
“Everyday Is A Winding Road” (1999) – Original by Sheryl Crow
“Crimson and Clover” (also featuring The Troggs’ “Wild Thing”) (2009) – Original by Tommy James and the Shondells
“Purple House” (2000s tribute compilation) – Original “Red House” by Jimi Hendrix
“A Case of U” (2002) – Original by Joni Mitchell

and a 2015 update:
“Another Love” on PLECTRUMELECTRUM (2014) – Original by Alice Smith
“Plectrumelectrum” (2014) – Original by Donna Grantis Band, titled “Elektra”
“What If?” (2015) – Original by Nichole Nordeman

…and that’s only to counter the point about recorded covers. He has done many live covers, including the much talked about Coachella appearance where he sang Radiohead’s ‘Creep”, and the Superbowl appearance where he sang Foo Fighters’ “Best Of You”. It doesn’t work both ways. He should be happy someone is giving him a cover story and not use the forum to knock others for what he also does.

It is very hard to keep following someone’s music when every interview yields some hypocritical quote that makes me want to smack my forehead. Prince, I hereby challenge you to apologize publicly for “Betcha By Golly Wow!”.
